Mauritius Medicinal Plants at your Doorstep

Let's immediately look at those plants.

Neem

Neem, a plant whose benefits have been used since centuries, is not common to every Mauritian. I have it in my yard. There has already been a lot of people coming everyday asking for its leaves. But why? Here are some of its discovered medicinal use:

It relieves Arthritis, reduces tumor, is used as a contraception. Its twigs are excellent for Dental Care. Avoid heart diseases, malaria. Ulcers disappear with neem leaves. Neem has been highly successful against harmful fungi, parasites, and viruses. In a way, it cures skin diseases. A wide multitude of diseases or conditions can be successfully treated with various elements of neem.

Citronelle
Lemon grass, known as Citronelle, is consumed by people suffering from Cough, cold & sore throats, Anxiety, High cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, Colitis, Rough, dry, scaly skin, Acne, Constipation, Kidney detoxification, Insomnia. Doctors have shown that it is a remedy for Cancer. Taken as a tea, it has many benefits.


Aloe vera








Aloe Vera needs no introduction. Highly reputed as the most common medicinal plant in this decade, it's found in almost every yard of Mauritius.

Apply its gel on your skin and it can do miracles. Sunburn is relieved, your skin glows, insect bites and any allergic reactions, eczema, burns, inflammations, wounds, psoriasis... all these are scared of the aloe vera.
When taken as a juice it replenishes your body naturally with essential amino acids, supports immune system, strengthens gums and promotes strong and healthy teeth. Aloe vera is known to work wonders in promoting shine and moisture in hair, and preventing hair loss and dandruff.

Carri Poulet
The Curry Tree, or Carri Poulet (Kaloupilé). Physical ailments such as stomach disorders and nausea are also cured by this wonder leaf. It is a common practice to let a nauseous person smell this leaf whenever he/she gets the tendency to vomit. One way to control blood sugar levels in a diabetic patient is to chew and eat a couple of curry leaves along with a few pepper corns first thing in the morning on empty stomach. Eating the leaves helps in strengthening hair roots.
The calcium content in curry leaves help in strengthening the bones. So, the next time you get it in your plates, don't throw it away...eat it!


Lemon
Lemon. It has many benefits apart from being used in rums (lol).
It has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and immune-boosting powers and their use as a weight loss aid because lemon juice is a digestive aid and liver cleanser.It clears skin, acne. Common flu goes away, as well as hypertension. It cures bug bites.
The best way to consume it is with warm water and few drops of lemon. Honey added is better.


Tulsi






Sacred to Hindus, the Tulsi leaves (Basil) have healing power. For your mind, it makes it sharp and increases memory. Fever & Common Cold, Coughs, Kidney Stone, Heart Disorder, Mouth Infections,
Insect Bites, Eye Disorders, all these go away with Tulsi juice.

    1. I don't sell neem. You can get them around Rs50 a plant easily at Curepipe (Agro).

  7. Lovely - we get them as super foods. There's aloe vera tea, aloe vera pure and a lot of essential oils available in SA. Maybe I should start a business...would you guys buy? :) I'm Mauritian too by the way.
